Noosphere

noösphere ˈnōəˌsfir noun A postulated sphere or stage of evolutionary development dominated by consciousness, the mind, and interpersonal relationships (frequently with reference to the writings of Teilhard de Chardin).ORIGIN: 1940s: from French noösphere, based on Greek nous ‘mind.’ and Greek sphaira ‘orb, globe.’


Pierre Teilhard de Chardin (1881-1955) ialah seorang ahli falsafah,anthropologi biologikal dan geologi yang pernah menulis bahawa, "The Age of Nations is past. The task before us now, if we would not perish, is to build the Earth." Beliau sangat teruja dalam memikir dan mengajukan 'possibilities' hala tuju umat manusia. Beliau membayangkan kita akan sampai ke satu 'convergence of systems',satu titik Omega di mana pertembungan dan percantuman kesedaran (coalescence of consciousness) akan membuka ruang kepada kedamaian dan muafakat manusia sejagat.

“The phrase ‘Sense of the Earth’ should be understood to mean the passionate concern for our common destiny which draws the thinking part of life ever further onward. The only truly natural and real human unity is the spirit of the Earth. The sense of Earth is the irresistible pressure which will come at the right moment to unite them (humankind) in a common passion. We have reached a crossroads in human evolution where the only road which leads forward is towards a common passion. To continue to place our hopes in a social order achieved by external violence would simply amount to our giving up all hope of carrying the Spirit of the Earth to its limits.” - ini rumusan falsafah Teilhard

Beliau berpendapat dunia dalam proses evolusi yang akan dan sedang mewujudkan sebuah level kesedaran baru yang diberi nama noosphere.Noosphere ini adalah sebuah "planetary thinking network" - sebuah interlinked sistem gergasi yang terhasil dari penyatuan kesedaran,perolehan maklumat,ilmu pengetahuan dan komunikasi.Sudah tentu pada ketika ini alat utama yang membawa kita menuju ke noosphere adalah Internet.Bayangkan ketika Teilhard megemukakan teorinya,komputer yang wujud adalah hampir seluas padang bola sepak dan Internet mungkin cuma sebuah khayalan fantasi sci-fi.

Woit,hold your horses! Akan tetapi,dalam kita menghala ke Omega point yang dijangka oleh Teilhard,kita wajib ingat bahawa substance yang melincirkan penetrasi kita adalah 'hati'.Dalam kata lain,sifat kemanusiaan.

“It is not our heads or our bodies which we must bring together, but our hearts. Humanity is building its composite brain beneath our eyes. May it not be that tomorrow, through the logical and biological deepening of the movement drawing it together, it will find its heart, without which the ultimate wholeness of its power of unification can never be achieved?”

Noosphere adalah aksi 'orgy' antara fikrah,emosi,maklumat, keilmuan,kemanusiaan yang akan menzuriatkan sebuah bumi yang bersatu..satu bangsa manusia.

Di kala ini yang penuh dengan uncertainties seperti krisis ekonomi kapitalis,ketidakadilan pengagihan kekayaan,penindasan dan penganiayaan,rasisme dan fascism,terrorisma,etc,seharusnya kita reflect upon the notion of noosphere,agar tidak terus lemas dalam kegilaan memuaskan ketamakan materialistik melampau.Juga wajib ada balance dan titik pertemuan antara idealism dengan pragmatism,intelek dengan emosi serta kemahuan yang utuh untuk merobohkan halangan-halangan.

Yang kita idamkan adalah sebuah evolusi kemanusiaan di mana hati budi dan fikrah tidak lagi berada dalam konflik tetapi interdigitate dan complement satu sama lain untuk merealisasikan noosphere yang diajukan oleh Pierre Teilhard de Chardin.

anyway,untuk achieve noosphere ni,kena ada satu force yang boleh breakthrough semua tembok-tembok pemisah yang terdiri daripada warna kulit,seksual orientasi,jantina,agama bangsa dan sebagainya.dan yang inilah yang sedang diperkukuhkan (fortification) oleh fasis-fasis yang meniup-niupkan semangat assabiyah dan perbezaan.

Jadi - apakah pendukung noosphere ni mampu memecahkan tembok perbezaan ini?

Tapi satu la - kalau datang dari Princeton ni - gua susah nak percaya laa..

noosphere ni bukan ideology laa..its a philosophy..takde langsung political blueprint dalam tulisan2 Teilhard..

btw,apa yang Teilhard ckp banyak yang consistent dengan Marx..socialisation of consciouness n utopian views..

tapi one thing kena ingat lah,Marx tak hidup untuk tengok totalitarian regimes yang menyamar sbg proletariat dictatorship..

to see Noosphere in action,you should see how Internet changes entire society,in some views,in some issues,the Internet has bring all human mind together and create a global consciousness.

But talk about Noosphere,you shouldn't escape from Ken Wilber Integral Theory.He explains on his book and compares between Platonic and Neo Platonic philosophy in Western World and also Eastern philosophy such as Buddhism or Conficiousism.And how to create Noosphere if contradiction between East and West still not settled?

Also don't ever miss Jurgen Habermas describing about collective human developement.

I'm a pragmatist,I was anti-Marxist before this,due to failure of Eastern Europe in late 90s,but frustrated with capitalism,I guess Marxist should be revived,but not in Stalinist style.

So,should I call myself pragmatist over Marxist?I think so.hik hik!but now,I guess Fukuyama should bury his The End of History and The Last Man hik hik!

Ez - Yup,it's a long way to go..

on Wilbur,his AQAL idea really is important to note..as he said understanding of philosophy,Marxism,behaviourism and psychoanalysis should all go hand-in-hand rather than be conflicting..

I really like Habermas' criticism of postmodernity..and of course he arguably contributed more to Marxist thinking than any other modern thinker..and thankfully he screwed those bunch of wankers at Frankfurt School..haha

When we mentioning about Habermas,perhaps we should mentioning Jacques Derrida as well,did you read his work?of course his deconstructionism seems to me quite close with his biggest influence Michel Foucault.Somehow I kinda like Foucault work,like Madness and Civilization that for me seems relevant for today.

I still remember my lecturer told me that mrelationship between Derrida and Habermas it's like bitter enemies become friends..but of course,Habermas criticism towards post-modernity is awesome!Couldn't agree more than that.Those postmodernist are not referring to reality,failed to differentiate situation and practices that occur in modern society.

What do you think about Habermas concept or public sphere? Is our public sphere is good enough to create even larger space for democracy and decentralizes the power,from bourgeoisie politicians or feudal kings,to the people that finally achieve true democracy?

What is the chance of revolution,shall it happen right now,your opinion,which country should start first the revolution of the proletariat,or should the revolution start spontaniously across the world,and how this revolution to creating more space to public sphere and eventually spread across the world?

Ez-I'm not so familiar with Derrida,but I did read about his philosophy of lingustics back in my university days and not much else..since you mentioned his closeness to Foucault,I'll check out his work..thanks

talking about public sphere today,perhaps we should first think about this:are the people aware enough of the possibilities of the public sphere that exists today?..if they do,would they care to fully utilise it..this is the most frustrating thing thats happening,we have it but we just don't care enough..

but then again lets not discount the counter-public spheres headed by religious fundamentalists and fascists..but the reach of these people are still quite fragmented although gaining more influence..

Gauging the true effects of today's public sphre which no doubt is headed by the internet is quite tricky as we do not have much historical precedence to compare with..And the conditions that encourage compromise are also glaringly absent today..

About revolution,I am quite unsure to answer this haha..The signs that emerge today is not easy to read..and we are still too divided,too fragmented to really consider a revolution at the time being.

aku rasa blog aku tu takde la susah nak digest nak faham..tapi pun ada orang tak faham2..

balik-balik soal ideologi,soal fahaman..kadang2 aku rasa benda2 camni yang buat kita lupa - kita ni manusia.

ya - aku masih berfahaman marxis,masih lagi mengharapkan manusia hidup satu bangsa,tapi dalam berteori dan berfalsafah,mamat-mamat yang disebut ni bukannya pernah bau ketiak masam kaum pekerja kat lrt atau bas,bukan pernah kena maki ngan bos kat tempat kerja pun,jadi macam ni la..

penulisan boleh jadi hebat kalau kita boleh refer teori kita,dengan keadaan semasa.
